Isn't the 'Wildcat' really the Wing-T ?
Submitted by Dan Coughlin on Thu, 12/17/2009 - 8:19pm

I don't know why they call football's trendy new formation the "Wildcat" when it's really the old Wing-T? Chardon's been running the most extreme version of the Wing-T for years. Mayfield has been running a less extreme version. You saw the highlights almost every Friday night on Fox 8.
Dan Coughlin Talks Browns, HS Football Championship and Much More
Submitted by Dan Coughlin on Mon, 12/07/2009 - 5:09pm
Lotta things to cover. I'll do it quickly.
The Browns scored nine points in the last two minutes to make the score look close against San Diego Sunday because the Chargers relaxed and had some defensive backups in there. The Browns scored only seven points when the Chargers were serious.
When I was driving to Channel 8 in the afternoon to anchor the Sunday night shows, there was virtually no traffic headed into town. In the old days there would be traffic jams on the Innerbelt Bridge an hour before the game, lined up to exit at Ontario and E. Ninth St. None of that this past Sunday. Then I saw why. The Stadium was only half-filled. They called it a sellout. What a charade! Tickets may have been sold but went unused. They couldn't even give them away.
Chagrin Falls Will Score More Points Than The Browns
Submitted by Dan Coughlin on Sat, 12/05/2009 - 11:58am
This is the recommended wager of the weekend. The proposition bet Chagrin Falls vs. the Cleveland Browns. Who will score more points this weekend, the Chagrin Falls Tigers in their state championship game Saturday morning or the Cleveland Browns Sunday vs. San Diego? The Browns are favored by 2 1/2 points. Take Chagrin Falls. Bet the house on it.

Unplugged and Unreachable

Tried to reach Ken Maglicic and Joe Kantor after reading about them in Jim Dent’s new book about Notre Dame’s 1964 football season. It was head coach Ara Parseghian’s first year, the season that completely turned around the Irish program. Maglicic and Kantor were quoted at length.
Anyway, I tried to reach both of them the other day, but neither is in the phone book. I know they’re around. They both live here in the Cleveland area. Maglicic went to St. Joe’s High School, Kantor to St. Ignatius.

Win By Betting Against the Browns
Submitted by Dan Coughlin on Mon, 11/02/2009 - 11:30am
You can make a lot of money betting against the Browns. They rarely cover the spread. Yesterday, for instance, the Browns were 13-point underdogs and they lost by 24 to the mediocre Chicago Bears. No number is too big for our Browns.
Last week a wise old head in a newsroom which will not be identified suggested that the best time to bet against the Browns is when they're at home because the oddsmakers automatically allow three points for home field advantage. The Browns have no home field advantage. They're equally pitiful home or away.
Keep that in mind in two weeks when the Browns come off the bye week and play Baltimore here at home. While that's the best time, remember that there is no bad time.
New Browns Reach New Low
Submitted by Dan Coughlin on Mon, 10/26/2009 - 9:37am
In losing to a very ordinary Green Bay team, 31-3, Sunday the Browns reached their lowest level of futility since returning as an expansion team in 1999, which means it's the saddest moment in the history of pro football in Cleveland. I echo what Reggie Rucker said on Channel 5 Sunday night. "Embarrasing," he said.
"Shameful," I say.
Anyone who shows up at Browns Stadium the rest of the year should have a big brown "S" stamped on his or her forehead identifying that person as Stupid, a Sap, and a Sucker.
