Will Holmgren Re-wire the Office?
Submitted by Dan Coughlin on Fri, 01/15/2010 - 6:14pm

That's what often happens after a change at the top in the NFL. The new guy installs his own bugs -- secret, illegal listening devices in offices and meeting rooms. That's how paranoid the NFL has become. The boss wants to know what the assistant coaches, scouts, etc., are saying when they think nobody is listening.
Waiting for Cribbs to Get Hurt
Submitted by Dan Coughlin on Fri, 01/08/2010 - 12:31am

I don't blame Josh Cribbs for running out of patience with the Browns' foot-dragging. He plays the most dangerous position in sports, with the possible exception of Alpine skiing.
Kick, returners don't last long because they are involved in the most violent collisions in the game -- ball carrier and tackler running head-on at full speed. Only on kick returns do you see this.
The secret to Cribbs' success is his start. He doesn't hesitate as some kick returners do, looking for an opening, cautiously dancing. His first step is straight ahead at full speed. It's a game of chicken. The faint-hearted need not apply.
This is what I think. The Browns expected him to get hurt, which is the reason they misled him, deceived him, lied to him, until that time came. After that, he wouldn't matter. Cart him off and cancel the remaining years of his contract. They had no intention of sweetening his contract. For Pete's sake, they had 18 months to re-work his deal. The organization is insenstive. It is non-caring.
Brady has proved nuthin'

I don't know if Brady Quinn is the guy to pin the Browns' future upon. Against the Steelers he was less than mediocre. He's surrounded by bush leaguers, of course, and an amateur offense. I'll be long dead before this organization rises above the level of embarrassment.
Cleveland has enriched the NFL immensely. The other owners got about $18 million each, which was their individual shares of the $535 million expansion fee Al Lerner paid for the team. Then we paid for a new stadium and handed it over to Lerner and the NFL.
What did we get in return?
Dung.
Dan Coughlin Talks Browns, HS Football Championship and Much More
Submitted by Dan Coughlin on Mon, 12/07/2009 - 5:09pm
Lotta things to cover. I'll do it quickly.
The Browns scored nine points in the last two minutes to make the score look close against San Diego Sunday because the Chargers relaxed and had some defensive backups in there. The Browns scored only seven points when the Chargers were serious.
When I was driving to Channel 8 in the afternoon to anchor the Sunday night shows, there was virtually no traffic headed into town. In the old days there would be traffic jams on the Innerbelt Bridge an hour before the game, lined up to exit at Ontario and E. Ninth St. None of that this past Sunday. Then I saw why. The Stadium was only half-filled. They called it a sellout. What a charade! Tickets may have been sold but went unused. They couldn't even give them away.
Chagrin Falls Will Score More Points Than The Browns
Submitted by Dan Coughlin on Sat, 12/05/2009 - 11:58am
This is the recommended wager of the weekend. The proposition bet Chagrin Falls vs. the Cleveland Browns. Who will score more points this weekend, the Chagrin Falls Tigers in their state championship game Saturday morning or the Cleveland Browns Sunday vs. San Diego? The Browns are favored by 2 1/2 points. Take Chagrin Falls. Bet the house on it.
A Quiet Sunday. Could Be a Habit.

I heard a lot of jokes about the Browns' bye week. My favorite was John Telich's line: "The Browns were 20-point underdogs to bye week."
It was genuinely pleasant not having to worry about them. As painful as it is, in our racket we must watch because we might have to talk about them.
The Browns are sadder than a country song and after reading Randy Lerner's exclusive email interview with Tony Grossi in The Plain Dealer last week I have not one iota of hope. Randy is a very nice person, very likeable, but the poor fellow is clueless about football and he admits it.
Win By Betting Against the Browns
Submitted by Dan Coughlin on Mon, 11/02/2009 - 11:30am
You can make a lot of money betting against the Browns. They rarely cover the spread. Yesterday, for instance, the Browns were 13-point underdogs and they lost by 24 to the mediocre Chicago Bears. No number is too big for our Browns.
Last week a wise old head in a newsroom which will not be identified suggested that the best time to bet against the Browns is when they're at home because the oddsmakers automatically allow three points for home field advantage. The Browns have no home field advantage. They're equally pitiful home or away.
Keep that in mind in two weeks when the Browns come off the bye week and play Baltimore here at home. While that's the best time, remember that there is no bad time.
New Browns Reach New Low
Submitted by Dan Coughlin on Mon, 10/26/2009 - 9:37am
In losing to a very ordinary Green Bay team, 31-3, Sunday the Browns reached their lowest level of futility since returning as an expansion team in 1999, which means it's the saddest moment in the history of pro football in Cleveland. I echo what Reggie Rucker said on Channel 5 Sunday night. "Embarrasing," he said.
"Shameful," I say.
Anyone who shows up at Browns Stadium the rest of the year should have a big brown "S" stamped on his or her forehead identifying that person as Stupid, a Sap, and a Sucker.
Why the Browns Shouldn't Trade Quinn & the High School Football Top 35
Submitted by Dan Coughlin on Tue, 10/20/2009 - 11:11am
The only interesting games left are high school affairs. The Browns chronic story line is, "Can they beat the spot?" This past week they did. They were getting 14 and lost by 13, a small triumph.
In my humble opinion, if the Browns trade Brady Quinn, they will go 1-15 because when Derek Anderson gets hurt they'll have no backup quarterback. Injury is inevitable. Two-thirds of all starting quarterbacks in the NFL go down with injury for more than one game at some point in the season. Browns quarterbacks are more vulnerable than most for obvious reasons.
Browns-Bills -- A Disgrace
Submitted by Dan Coughlin on Sun, 10/11/2009 - 9:06pm
A waste of three hours. Another day ruined.
Worst quarterbacking in NFL history.

There should be no rejoicing over that abomination. As a matter of principle, the Browns should protest the victory over the Buffalo Bills. Like a Christmas sweater, they should return the win to the league and declare it a loss. It should be a loss for both teams.
The Bills were the worst-coached team I have ever seen. Both teams had the worst quarterbacking.
